To mask or not to mask, that is the question!

I don’t have a medical degree or a nursing degree but I can do research and I can use critical thinking skills..

I’m not here to tell you to use a mask or not to.  I don’t think anyone should do that because no matter what we think currently and no matter what you’ve been told, nobody can guarantee your safety. We each much protect ourselves and protect our family the best we can with the info we have at any given moment. We will surely be learning new info as the year continues and things will change again. Everything changes and that’s the best part about life.

Since I’m not here to tell you what to do, I will give you some information so you can use Your critical thinking skills.  Each of us has a different perception but together we can see the whole picture. If you agree, let me know and if you don't please tell me why!  I’m always up for learning but I’ll never debate with someone whom resorts to name calling or bashing.

Here we go..

Study done in 2015

“Penetration of cloth masks by particles was almost 97% and medical masks 44%.”
“Further research is needed to inform the widespread use of cloth masks globally. However, as a precautionary measure, cloth masks should not be recommended for HCWs, particularly in high-risk situations, and guidelines need to be updated.”  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4420971/

Gives several sources for different studies done on masks and their affectiveness.

2015 Study - Are Face Masks Safe during Pregnancy

I know this one seems a little odd but there is some rumor that face masks are actually harmful to our health.  I not only want to know if they are effective but also if they will harm me any..
I’m sure the rumors burned like wild fire because they do in fact make it harder to breath. They affect my anxiety almost immediately which got me wondering how good it was to be breathing in the CO2 I had blowing into the mask on the previous exhale..

Since there are a few things about this pandemic that get my spidey senses buzzing I wanted to see studies done before 2020. Oddly enough this was the only study I could find and to be blunt.. If they say it’s safe for expecting moms then it cant be that hard on the body, right?

“For the two groups, researchers observed no noteworthy differences in how the hearts and lungs of the participants performed. However, both pregnant and non-pregnant women wearing the respirator mask had a mild—but significant—increase in the heart’s resting, or diastolic, blood pressure. The temporary increase did not affect heart and lung function, so it is unlikely to cause health problems in healthy women, the researchers said.“

I’ll leave you with this..

Masks are very limited in study material, they appear safe in the way that they don’t  affect the co2 or oxygen levels of the wearer. There is a lot of conflicting information on how effective they are though.  Most stuff that has been pushed out this year is pro mask but oddly enough there are a few sources from before 2020 that don’t back up the theory that they are helping more than harming.

To mask or not to mask is the question and it’ll have to remain one that we each must answer for ourselves.
